Opération Bonne Mine and Jean Coutu have supported back-to-school for more than 100,000 children over the last 25 years

17 July 2019

(Montreal, July 17, 2019) - Once again this year, Opération Bonne Mine has allowed about 7,000 children to benefit from school supply coupons at a Jean Coutu store or a school in Quebec.

Opération Bonne Mine (OBM), an initiative of the Société de Saint-Vincent de Paul (SSVP) established in 1994, is a program whose mission is to encourage children to stay in school by offering tools to support the return to school, development and self-esteem for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
OBM offers families financial support for back-to-school time in the form of a voucher worth $50 exchangeable in a school or a Jean Coutu pharmacy in the province. Opération Bonne Mine helps provide elementary- and high-school-aged children a successful return to school by reducing financial pressures for families when buying school supplies and paying school fees. “Once again this year, the program continues throughout Quebec,” $$$$ explains Ms. Émilie Journet, Opération Bonne Mine program director. “This is because of the continued invaluable collaboration of the Jean Coutu network. The partnership is essential.”

The first days of school are important. “All children should be given the chance to start the school year with all the supplies they need to succeed,” explains Jean-Michel Coutu, senior vice-president, PJC Jean Coutu. “Once again this year, the Jean Coutu network is happy to support children in the communities it serves and to help their return to school”
Statistics for Greater Montreal during the last 3 years show that up to 65% of families supported by the program shop at a Jean Coutu store. Families supported by OBM have till October 31, 2019, to get school supplies.
